Chiese Romane and Our Special Guest

Dr. Carpenter gives a fascinating presentation on the Pagan roots of some of his favorite Roman churches (and gelato stops)

Constantine: Salvato alla morte!

Dr. Carpenter outdid himself once again with a great discussion on three of his favorite Roman churches with archaeological ties to the Pagan world. He took us on a virtual tour of San Cristogono, San Giovanni in Laterano, and San Clemente. Read on for information and links about these great places to visit!

Dr. Carpenter and the members of CIAO. May 14, 2009.

San Crisogono

San Crisogano, una basilica in Trastevere. The church underneath was from the second and third centuries A.D., before Christianity was legal. The modern church was rebuilt in 1130.

Ewww. Emperor Constantine and his fictional leprosy. Che schifo!

San Giovanni in Laterano- this church is Vatican territory, and it is the Pope's church (not St. Peters Cathedral). This is the first legal Christian Church from the fifth century A.D. Constantine gave them the church, which was built on top of a horse guard's horse stalls who fought to defeat Constantine. Adding insult to injury. This church has a baptistry near which supposedly the steps from Jerusalem that Christ walked up were moved here.

San Clemente- church near the Colosseum. Underneath the church is two more layers. The bottom layer is an ancient Roman apartment. The second layer is another church from the fourth century. The top church is from the eleventh century.

Che passione per Roma che ha!

Dr. Carpenter keeps his audience captivated!

The man knows Rome. If we're lucky, he'll become a guide-for-hire after retiring from OU. We'd all love to travel to Rome with Dr. Carpenter!

Roman archaeology gets us all riled up.

...And causes presidents to loosen their neckties.
